(Fig 1)
Unusual architecture of free floating ceilings and curved entry arch combine
to create a unique setting for this jewelry store. The designers worked
closely with the architect and owners to create a lighting tableau that
accentuates the architecture and the custom designed jewelry.
(Fig 2)
Glare control was a major consideration and aiming angles were carefully
calculated to prevent a visual interference at virtually all viewing angles.
26W - 4100K compact fluorescent downlights with black alzac reflectors
provide general lighting that complements the daylight component and gently
transitions into the warmer tones of the rear of the store.
(Fig 3)
Troughs of 35W MR16IRC narrow spot lamps light the display cabinets. Cove
lighting using inexpensive lightstrips with 25G25/W lamps provide a warm
wash on the side and rear walls.
(Fig 4)
20W MR16 well-lights uplight the arch columns and intentional scallops
of light draw the eye, and the draw customer towards the rear of the store.
(Fig. 5)
Low voltage striplights with integral 35W MR11 spots and floods light
the display windows.
(Fig. 6)
Walls around the windows are left un-illuminated for greater contrast.
(Fig. 7)
The interplay of light and shadow throughout the space augments the sparkle
of the jewelry. Note that at normal eye-height, no lamp image is visible
in the glass counters.
(Fig. 8)
The overall impression of the store is one of brightness, splendor and
openness, from the first experience of the outside windows and continuing
throughout the store. This project took first place in the Masterline
category of the 2002 Philips Lighting Awards.
