As visitors approach the 3-story entrance vestibule, they are greeted
by a halo of multicolored blown glass pendants; also seen through the
second-floor's inner-wall of windows.
(Fig 3)
This project demanded a challenging integration of architecture and lighting,
comprising two floors wither very different spatial arrangements: a first
floor with level finished, ceiling and second floor with high sloped ceiling.
The vaulted entry hall with glowing back lit glass lid seen over book
checkout desk.
(Fig. 4 - 6)
Usage flexibility was a key consideration in the lighting design for this
space, with lighting needed to accommodate future repositioning of book
stacks.
Varying light levels
across the space of 10 - 100 footcandles were incorporated to make the
space suitable for many visual tasks.
Pairs of 400W metal
halide uplights wrap columns on the upper floor, providing indirect lighting
off the white ceiling and highlighting the columns' unique detailing.
Wall mounted 400W
metal halide uplights provide additional indirect lighting.
HID ballasts were
located in insulated service rooms to eliminate ballast noise.

the "Origin of the Letter A" in nine alphabet character icons
on 9 "crystal tablets" commissioned by the library, is seen
hanging above the grand lobby staircase.
