(Fig 1) Project
This passenger subway station connects 2 color-coded routes in a busy
international airport. The architecture features underground train and
transportation themes. Lighting enhances these themes while creating a
brightness hierarchy for circulation zones. Several light levels are available
for energy conservation.
(Fig 2) Train Wall
Ceiling
Highlighted train doors and thresholds at 25 footcandles promote safety
and define the circulation path. Narrow beam specular industrial turrets
above removable black eggcrate louvers maximize light transmission while
concealing source. MR16 downlights in door frame provide threshold illumination,
and are easily accessed through removable signage panels. Art track lighting
uses incandescent PAR sources selected by artist.
(Fig 3) Train Wall
Asymmetric throw and narrow beam industrial turrets above eggcrate louvers
accent colored wall panels. Channel strips illuminate similar wall color
theme in train tunnel.
(Fig. 4) Canopy
Canopy's custom trough conceals T5 asymmetric uplighting and MR16 recessed
adjustable accents, and allows for easy maintenance. Lower ambient illumination
level below the canopy defines waiting zone. Fluorescent uplighting highlights
aeronautically inspired canopy supports. MR16 accents will light future
subway maps.
(Fig. 5) Canopy -
Train Slide
Signage band, viewed from train doors, conceals T8 channel strips illuminating
the brushed metal reflector "wing" of the canopy. CFL fixtures
wash yellow all panels emphasizing the lesser-used shuttle side of the
station. Wood paneled walls and ceiling with lower ambient light levels
separate train waiting areas.
(Fig. 6) High Ceiling
CFL downlights accentuate canopy curve in high ceiling areas.
