(Fig 1)
This cutting-edge biotech corporation requested a lighting makeover for
its headquarters atrium. Goal - create a space conducive to think-tank
meetings and encourage innovative thought. Chandeliers create a much needed
visual component in the space, which previously was void of perceptible
interest.
(Fig 2)
The chandeliers take on a sculptural role during daylight hours. The fixed
pieces evoke impressions of movement, creating a dynamic environment.
(Fig 3)
The brightness and intensity of naturally occurring light levels within
the atrium create an ongoing transformation, evolving by the hour, and
by the changing seasons. Eight adjustable downlights grouped with the
chandeliers distribute uniform light levels, giving the impression that
the chandeliers are providing the light while ensuring adequate illumination
levels at all times.
(Fig. 4)
Measuring 15 feet across, each chandelier is made up of 15 hand blown
glass vessels. Aluminum tubing comprises the frame. Transformers are housed
in pods and appear to act as a counterbalance. Removable vessels allow
for ease in relamping and maintenance. Quotations from a variety of sources
enabled us to assess budget issues and meet the client's financial requirements.
(Fig. 5)
Vibrantly colored chandeliers add a dynamic, warm quality, and the new
lighting system provides better color and consistent light levels. Downlights
with 4100K ceramic metal halide lamps equalize ever-shifting light levels.
(Fig. 6)
The sculptural elements of the chandeliers are the centerpiece, filling
the expanse with a kinetic presence of counterbalance and geometry, expressing
the volume and movement through a delicate balance of mass and space which
changes as one moves throughout the area.
