Airport, Concourse C Lighting Designer Project Owner Photography The Concourse C addition to the Spokane international Airport provided a wonderful opportunity to showcase a dynamic forward-looking face to our city. The project included various challenges. The Washington Non-Residential Energy Code allowed only 1.0 W/sq.ft. The high visibility and high use of the building warranted special attention and need for correct light levels. Maintenance was a major concern and wearied travelers meant that a pleasant and comfortable environment was needed. A strict budget had to be met and the approach needed design longevity. The building took full advantage of daylighting, but also recognized that the building appearance at night would be important. In the main ticketing lobby, long-life neon is used to define the ceiling architecture and create some wonderful reflections. All fixtures had to be below a prescribed height accessible by the owner's maintenance equipment. Stylistic twin pendants with 250W metal halide produce the direct lighting. The uplights correspond to the pendants and highlight the columns, while gently lighting the ceiling plane, providing a nice contrast balance between the pendants and the ceiling. The counters are delineated by floating glass downlights, with a continuous wall wash for the signage. Cooperation with the architectural team created wonderful ceiling details. The seating area is lighting with T5 indirect linear. Solid body fixtures were selected to ensure a clean appearance year after year while providing comfortable lighting for tired eyes. The end-result was a project within budget and lighting which provides comfort, environmental and security while meeting energy requirements.
