Awards Norway Hills Residence Lighting Designer(s) Project Owner Photography This unusual residence consists of 3 structures surrounding a south facing courtyard and a fourth garage structure that forms a north wing. The prominence of the courtyard provided opportunity to integrate exterior lighting into the overall lighting design for the project. The walkways to the main entry are lit by building mounted lanterns - the entry vestibule is highlighted as a way-finding device. Unlike most architect-designed homes, this project was developed to be sold. The speculative nature of the work dictated a very tight budget. In addition, lighting the overall volume of the great space effectively and efficiently presented a difficult problem. Budget concerns were addressed by integrating utilitarian luminaires into the architecture, and carefully placing the few decorative luminaires to achieve maximum impact. Indirect ambient lighting for the great room is provided by quartz floodlights mounted on the lid of the central entry/toilet enclosure. Living room wall sconces are located to be seen through the entry and kitchen from other spaces. The bulkhead over the kitchen sink conceals track mounted task lighting for the work area. Kitchen island pendants provide a visual diversion between the kitchen and dining room while providing task lighting for cooking. Recessed low-voltage luminaires provide focus on the hearth and the courtyard view beyond. Spill light from the interior creates a warm glow in the courtyard. The structures framing the courtyard are accented by inexpensive wall mounted lanterns and the landscaping is highlighted by ground mounted, low-voltage luminaires.
