Figure 1
Integration was the goal and theme of this project; blending inside and
outside, lighting fixtures and architecture, daylight and artificial light,
and a comfortable home with a spectacular collection of painting and sculpture.

Figure 2
Daylight and display lighting combine to provide the ideal illumination
for the artwork while conforming to museum preservation standards. Sunlight
is allowed to enter rooms through windows offset from display walls to
prevent daylight from falling on the art collection. Two shading systems
were installed to reduce the duration of exposure, and the glazing was
specified and tested for UV transmission. The lighting and shades are
both managed with a central control system.

Figure 3
Small profile fixtures are concealed in soffits as part of a metal edge
detail. Thus the lighting systems appear as part of the project instead
of applied to it, and illuminates without distracting. The ceiling is
washed with light from luminaires above the soffit, creating a well-lit
environment without a visible source.

Figure 4
The combination of lighting fixtures and highly finished architectural
metal details is continued into corridors and other areas, reinforcing
the integration of lighting and architecture.

Figure 5
The level of finishes and dramatic lighting for this powder room make
it ideal for the display of objects special to the owner.

Figure 6
This early study of sunlight in the building us typical of the daylighting
studies performed during the design process.

Figure 7
Incorporating fluorescent uplights into the project creates a more energy
efficient solution and still retains a well lit and welcoming home.
